Way to Go Azipod! 700,000 Tonnes of Marine Fuel Saved in 25 Years

ABB estimates that its Azipod propulsion system has enabled fuel savings of more than 700,000 tonnes for the entire installed Azipod fleet since the system was launched 25 years ago.

Originally developed in Finland, Azipod is an electrical propulsion system that reduces a vessel’s fuel consumption by up to 20% and achieves decimetre accuracy in manoeuvrability without the aid of tugboats.

Today, Azipod is a trusted choice for a wide variety of vessels. It is installed, for instance, on the world’s largest cruise ship, as well as the most advanced icebreaker ever built.

According to research, the number of vessels with electric propulsion is growing at a rate of 12 percent per year, which is three times faster than the world’s fleet. In the course of 25 years, ABB’s Azipod has evolved into a market-leading solution and sealed its status as the industry standard in the marine sector.

“Our engineers continue to innovate to ensure Azipod propulsion meets the demands from a diverse range of ship owners,” said Juha Koskela, Managing Director of ABB’s Marine and Ports business unit. “A lot has changed in the shipping sector since we introduced the first Azipod, but the desire for efficiency, manoeuvrability, and reliability remains.”
