The upgraded version of the Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel auxiliary engine is rapidly becoming established as a global industry standard for LNG carrier applications.
The three major shipyards in South Korea are supporting the use of Wärtsilä’s engine for auxiliary applications in the LNG carrier segment where dual-fuel engines are favoured.
South Korea is the world’s largest shipbuilding nation, with a current share of more than 80% of the total order book for LNG carriers. Consequently, the market share of the Wärtsilä 34DF in the sector of LNG carrier auxiliary applications has climbed all the way up to 70%.
Originally introduced in 2008, the engine was upgraded in 2013 to provide 11% more power and increased efficiency without any change in physical dimensions.
Since the upgrade roughly two years ago, Wärtsilä has received orders for nearly 100 Wärtsilä 34DF engines from the above-mentioned the South Korean shipyards. By the end of the first half of 2015, Wärtsilä had already been awarded contracts for 56 such engines.
