For those who are curious, the Faroe Islands are an archipelago located halfway between Norway and Iceland. An autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, the islands have a population of roughly 50,000.
The tunnel contract with NCC is split into two sub-projects and is conditional upon the approval of project funding by the government of the Faroe Islands.
The value of the first tunnel amounts to approximately SEK 1.5 billion (EUR 150 million). The second tunnel is worth roughly SEK 1.2 billion (EUR 120 million), with an option for the customer to decide not to implement the project.
The tunnels included in the contract are 11.2 and 10.5 kilometres long, respectively. In addition to the tunnels, the projects also include the roads and roundabouts connecting the tunnels to the existing infrastructure.
Construction work on the first tunnel will commence in December 2016. NCC has previously constructed two tunnels in the Faroe Islands.
