Merivaara’s New Surgical Light Wins Major Finnish Design Award

Standard operating room lights create turbulence above the operating area, pulling particles upwards right over the patient and possibly into the surgery area. Merivaara’s Q-Flow (pictured on the right) is shaped as a series of concentric circles with open spaces in between. This minimalistic design improves laminar air flow so that sterile conditions are maintained.

The Merivaara Q-Flow surgical light has received the prestigious Fennia Prize Grand Prix award.

Organized biannually, the competition awards Finnish organizations for the exemplary use of design in their products, services, business processes, or concepts.

Q-Flow presents a number of innovations that, among other things, reduce the risk of hospital infections and improve work ergonomics for hospital staff. According to the competition jury, the solution is an ideal combination of high technology, design, and clear benefits to the user.

The innovative surgical light was first introduced at the Medica 2016 trade fair last November, and it has received a great deal of attention ever since.

Now, the production and sales of Q-Flow are about to commence. According to Ms Josefin Hoviniemi, Director of Marketing and Domestic Sales, Merivaara has already received plenty of pre-orders for its new product.

“We can expect this award to further boost our customers’ interest towards Q-Flow. In terms of sales, 2017 looks set to be a very interesting year,” Hoviniemi said.
