Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has delivered three hybrid shuttle carriers to Virginia International Gateway terminal (VIG) located along the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia.
The delivery marks the groundbreaking deployment of the first real hybrid shuttle carriers in the United States.
VIG is one of the few functional automated container terminals in the Western Hemisphere. With the terminal’s cargo volumes increasing, its operations team seeks to increase its container handling capacity while furthering its commitment to environmental values.
In addition to being stable, safe and reliable, Kalmar’s environmentally advanced cargo handling equipment reduces diesel fuel consumption and emissions as well as engine noise levels.
“Green technology, the efficiency and accuracy of operations, as well as employee safety are important factors for us at VIG,” said Joe Harris, spokesman for The Port of Virginia. “We are thrilled to see the first real hybrid shuttle carriers in the US now in action in our fleet.”
Ordered by The Port of Virginia in late 2014, the units have been in action in VIG since last week.
