ABB has achieved a major project milestone by installing DolWin Beta, the world’s most powerful offshore converter station, in the North Sea.
Part of the DolWin2 project operated by transmission system operator TenneT, the converter station will connect the largest offshore wind farm cluster in the world with the German grid.
When operational, DolWin2 will integrate an impressive 916 megawatts of clean wind energy into the German grid – enough to power over a million households.
Housed on an offshore platform, the 320-kilovolt converter station will convert the electricity generated by the offshore wind farms from alternating current (AC) into high-voltage direct current (HVDC) for efficient and reliable transmission to the mainland.
DolWin2 is the latest contributor to “EnergieWende”, Germany’s ambitious energy transition roadmap, which foresees the generation of as much as 15 gigawatts from offshore wind by 2030.
