ABB has introduced YuMi, the first truly collaborative dual-arm robot in the world.
YuMi was unveiled on Monday at Hannover Messe, the world’s leading trade fair for industrial technology.
The name of the robot stands for ”you and me”, referring to its groundbreaking ability to work collaboratively on the same tasks with humans, while still ensuring the safety of those around it.
”YuMi makes collaboration between humans and robots a reality,” said CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer, according to ABB. ”It is the result of years of research and development, and will change the way humans and robots interact.”
Designed for small parts assembly environments, YuMi is an integral part of ABB’s Next Level strategy, aimed at accelerating sustainable value creation.
In an interview earlier this year, ABB Robotics’ Head of Marketing and Sales Steven J. Wyatt told Industrial PRIME, ”YuMi will be one in a series of robots that will define the next five to ten years of robotics.”
